Affordable Ways to Travel

Travel has become more affordable than ever before. In fact, according to a recent study by the World Tourism Organization, the average cost of a vacation has decreased by 10% in the past five years. This is due to a number of factors, including the rise of budget airlines, the growth of the sharing economy, and the increasing availability of free activities and attractions.

There are a number of reasons for this decline in travel costs.

  1. The rise of low-cost airlines. These airlines have made it possible to fly to major destinations for a fraction of the cost of traditional airlines.

  2. The growth of the sharing economy. The sharing economy has made it possible to rent out homes, cars, and even bikes at a fraction of the cost of traditional rentals.

  3. The growth of online travel websites has made it easier than ever to compare prices and find the best deals on travel.

As a result of these factors, the cost of travel has been steadily declining for years. This makes it possible for more people to experience the world and see new places.

Here are some tips for traveling on a budget:

  1. Book your flights and accommodation in advance. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to find a good deal. I start my searches on google.com/flights to compare prices. However, I typically fly United because Houston is the main hub for that airline.

  2. Consider traveling during off-peak seasons. Prices for flights and accommodation are usually lower during off-peak seasons. Quick google searches will tell you when is the high and low seasons.

  3. Cook your own meals. Eating out can be expensive, especially if you're eating at restaurants. So cooking your own meals is a great way to save money. I like to make breakfast tacos to pack in a ziplock bag for a virtually hassle free meal because I don’t need cutlery or for it to be heated up.

  4. Take advantage of discounts and deals. There are a number of discounts and deals available for travelers. For example, many airlines offer student discounts and there are often discounts available for booking multiple flights or accommodation.

  5. Consider using a travel credit card. There are a number of travel credit cards that offer rewards such as points or miles that can be redeemed for travel. I have been loyal to United for over 10 years. I’ve booked several flights with points. For example: Indonesia to Denver RT = 80k points in 2018. Recently, I booked TWO RT tickets from Houston to Cuba for 70k points & ~$200USD.

  6. Pack light. The less you pack, the less you will have to pay for checked baggage. I also get a free checked bag for having the United Explorer credit card.

  7. Bring your own food and drinks. Eating out can be expensive, so it is a good idea to bring your own food and drinks with you when you travel. I almost never buy airport food, snacks, or water. Typically, I bring my reusable water bottle and ask a bartender to fill it up. I love this “hack” because I can get ice and the water usually taste better than the water fountains.

  8. Take advantage of free activities. There are many free activities available when you travel. For example, you can often visit museums and art galleries for free or go for walks in parks.

  9. Stay in hostels or guesthouses. Hostels and guesthouses are usually much cheaper than hotels.

  10. Get around on foot or public transportation. Taxis and Ubers can be expensive, so it is a good idea to get around on foot or public transportation when you travel.

By following these tips, you can travel on a budget and still have a great experience.
